Jingle Bells

by on Dec.01, 2011, under My Life, Travel

As a kid, we played in snow for several days – if not weeks – every winter. Just because there was snow on the ground did not mean we had to stay in the house and be bored. We got dressed in snow suits, knit caps and mittens, rubber boots, and we went out to play.

Every kid on our street had his own sled and his own bicycle. None of us were stupid enough to ride our bikes on icy roads, but that didn’t keep us home. We just got our sleds out and we rode those for hours at a time down the big hill by our house.

It wasn’t until I was grown and married that I ever went on a real sleigh ride. We went on vacation to Vermont and the ski lodge arranged for us to go a sleigh ride – complete with jingle bells on the horse’s reins. I love winter!

Goodbye, Walter Reed

by on Jul.22, 2011, under My Life, Our Culture, Travel

Anyone that has served in the  U. S. Army or has spent any amount of time in the Washington DC Metro area knows about Walter Reed Army Hospital. That hospital has been a vital part of the community for many years, providing rehab for injured veterans, medical services for military dependents, and even surgery and medical care for Presidents.

I guess everyone has always assumed it would be there, well maintained and renovated when needed. So I was surprised to read today that the Army has built a new, different facility and will be closing this landmark hospital shortly. I’m surprised and saddened by that.

Leather Weather

by on Sep.03, 2010, under Really Cool, Travel

Today was the perfect day for a ride on the back of my best friend’s Harley Davidson. Man there were so many bikes on the road today it just blew my mind. This summer we have had such extreme heat for the majority of the season that people haven’t been going out riding as much as they were looking forward to this summer. So I guess everyone was making up for lost time this Labor Day weekend.

We took a drive up to Skyline drive and found ourselves in the company of just about every other motorcycle rider in the entire area taking the same route along with us on the beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway that is so famous for their nice roads and motorcycle friendly security personal that patrol the place. They are certainly the best riding roads within hours of here and the surrounding counties just eat up all the money that is spent due to all of the bikers coming through.

Gas, Food and Beer are always in demand come nice weather on the weekends. We call this weather “Leather Weather” and you just can’t beat it if you tried.
