Sing Along

by on Dec.07, 2011, under Fun Games, My Life

We used to sing songs in the car on long trips. Now kids have their own little video monitor to watch movies and be kept entertained. I wonder if kids even get the chance to sing “Row, row, row your boat” anymore? They are missing out on a lot of family togetherness time if all they do is stare at a little flatscreen TV all day and all night.

Jingle Bells

by on Dec.01, 2011, under My Life, Travel

As a kid, we played in snow for several days – if not weeks – every winter. Just because there was snow on the ground did not mean we had to stay in the house and be bored. We got dressed in snow suits, knit caps and mittens, rubber boots, and we went out to play.

Every kid on our street had his own sled and his own bicycle. None of us were stupid enough to ride our bikes on icy roads, but that didn’t keep us home. We just got our sleds out and we rode those for hours at a time down the big hill by our house.

It wasn’t until I was grown and married that I ever went on a real sleigh ride. We went on vacation to Vermont and the ski lodge arranged for us to go a sleigh ride – complete with jingle bells on the horse’s reins. I love winter!

Willie Nelson Never Ages

by on Nov.24, 2011, under Music Videos, My Life

It seems that Willie Nelson has been old, wrinkled and long haired my entire life. I seriously remember hearing his songs as a little kid and seeing his picture on the record albums. He has always looked like this and he has always sounded the same, too. His style of playing guitar and singing is very distinctive. I think it is very cool that he is not all that great a vocalist, yet he is a living legend in the music industry. Yes, I’m a fan. Meeting him some day would be an historic moment for me.

Men in Skirts

by on Nov.18, 2011, under A Question, My Life, Our Culture

Did you know that in the colonial days of America, little boys wore dresses and skirts while young? They did not get to wear short pants until they were school age. I wonder when America decided that boys should wear pants instead? And when did mean decided to stop wearing kilts? I don’t remember any of my history books in school addressing this at all.

Greensleeves

by on Nov.13, 2011, under A Question, Music Videos, My Life, Our Culture

One of the classic songs that everyone has heard at least a few times by the time they turn 20 years old is Greensleeves. I have always thought it was a pretty song, a little sad, and for some reason turns up on a lot of Christmas music albums.

To be honest, I never really knew what the song was about. I could not recite any of the lyrics to this if you paid me big money to do it. So I decided to look it up on the internet. Wow. I had no idea and now I wonder how many other songs I have heard all my life that I have no real clue as to what they are about?
